BOOK CLUB | This year, we decided to return to a beloved classic: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. From the opening line–“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife”–Austen guides the reader through the societal expectations of the early 1800s. The novel follows the Bennet family during their mother’s quest to find suitable matches for her daughters.
When we return to school in August, AP Literature and AP Language students will guide our book club style discussion on the book’s plot, characters, and themes such as the roles of gender and class during England in the 1800s. We may even debate the best actors who have played the iconic roles of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy (spoiler alert–it’s Colin Firth).
For easy page reference, we will be using the Penguin Classics version.
Students, faculty, and parents are encouraged to read the book and invited to participate in our book club-style discussion. We hope to see you there!
