OnCampus is Gaston Day School’s Learning Management System, and provides an online platform for students and parents to communicate and participate with all aspects of Gaston Day life, not just academics. Furthermore, through OnCampus, you will also be able to access a number of informational items, including calendars, supply lists, and helpful links. Please reach out to Susan Gibson, our registrar, at sgibson@gastonday.org with any OnCampus questions.
BOOK CLUB | This year’s optional summer reading book for grades 9-12 is Everything is Tuberculosis by John Green. The book explores the scientific and social history of the world’s deadliest disease. Green highlights tuberculosis’s influence on everything from fashion to furniture to notions of beauty and intelligence.
Throughout the book, Green returns to the story of Henry, a patient in Sierra Leone who sparked his curiosity in the disease. When the author first met Henry at Lakka Government Hospital, Green thought his small size was due to his young age, only later learning that Henry’s 17 year old body was stunted by malnutrition and disease. Green explains how international healthcare policies have affected and continue to shape treatment options and availability. He writes, “the history and present of tuberculosis reveal the folly and brilliance and cruelty and compassion of humans. . . . everything is about tuberculosis, and tuberculosis is about everything.”
Students, faculty, and parents are encouraged to read the book and invited to participate in our book club-style discussion once school resumes in August. AP Language and AP Literature students will lead the discussion. We hope to see you there!
This year, we are partnering with Belmont Bookshop for our summer reading program. Gaston Day’s library will receive 10% of the proceeds from books ordered on their website or in person. Please be sure to mention Gaston Day when you purchase (or add it to the notes if you order online).
